Rich History

The town was incorporated in 1866 and named for Gabriel Bartlett, an area resident. Previously known as Union Depot and Green Bottom, the city had a hotel, manufacturers of wagons, plows and coffins, and several cotton centers. The town also had many dairy farms until the boll weevil destroyed the industry.
Bartlett Museum is the current owner of the Nicholas Gotten house, which was built in 1871 and designed in New England saltbox fashion (2969 Court Street). The house is on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum holds monthly lectures and exhibits on the history and culture of the city. The Bartlett Historical Society also provides costumed docents for public events and operates the downtown walking tour brochure.
